Tom Brownson's Platform for Astoria
Policy Stance
A comprehensive overview of our official platform addressing the core challenges facing our city.
Housing & Development
-
Code revision, including land-use. Maximize opportunities for housing for people of all income levels, without compromising livability. No crowding. Assure Astoria maintains its character.
-
Work with the City’s Community Development Department and Public Works to assure a user-friendly permitting process.
-
Explore expanding into Urban Growth boundaries to create more buildable land.
Community Safety
- Continue to work on issues all cities these days have with homelessness. Astoria FINALLY has made good progress here but we absolutely have to stay on top of it.
- Continue the work to find funding and locations for Public Works, Fire and Police Departments to get them out of the tsunami inundation zone.
Economic Growth
I am committed to fostering a vibrant local economy. My plan includes supporting small businesses through targeted grants and creating a more efficient tax structure to encourage investment and innovation.
-
In 2017 the city created with community partners a 5 year economic Development strategy called Advance Astoria (https://www.astoria.gov/Assets/dept_3/pm/pdf/cai.astoria_eds%202017.pdf). It's time to revisit and update this plan.
-
Look for opportunities to help the Port of Astoria move forward and succeed with both its Central Waterfront (https://www.portofastoria.com/central-waterfront-redevelopment) and Boatyard (https://www.portofastoria.com/boatyard-master-plan) Masterplans. Work efficiently with the Port as it navigates through the Pier 2 Rehabilitation Project (https://www.portofastoria.com/pier-2-west-rehabilitation-project) so as to support our fishing industries.
My Civic Vision
Join us in building a future where transparency and progress define our city's next chapter. We believe in the power of collective action to ensure every resident has a voice and a stake in our shared prosperity.
